Recruiting and Appointing Staff

The Catholic Education Service website pulls together all the CES employment documentation. It includes all the CES employment documentation that schools can use during application, recruitment and appointment and then throughout the life of the employment relationship.

The links below will take you to the relevant section of CES website. You may need to scroll down on the page to find the information you need.

Appointing Senior Leaders

When schools are recruiting to the following posts:

  • CEOs
  • Executive Headteachers
  • Headteachers
  • Head of School
  • Deputy Headteachers
  • Assistant Headteachers or the second most senior post holder

the Diocese must be contacted before recruitment processes commence and must be represented during the interview process.

Applicants for the two most senior posts in Catholic schools are required to comply with the Bishops’ Memorandum, which senior leaders must be provided with ahead of interview, together with the relevant CES contract, and will then be required to sign a declaration that they have had the opportunity to study both documents and have had the opportunity for any questions relating to them to be answered.

Guidance can also be found on the main government website.  The DfE have produced a useful document entitled, ‘Recruiting a headteacher‘.
